Inspired by the street art of Diane Arbus and August Sander, Christian Witkin picked up his camera in 1991 to begin his first serious photography project. His character portraits, gathered from the streets and parks of lower Manhattan, caught the attention of New York Magazine’s photo editor who put him to work on a special portrait issue. This collection garnered the prestigious Deadline Club award for Excellence in Journalism, and afforded him a chance to explore and define his own stylistic imprint in the street photography tradition.
